Former Republican Judge Defects to the Democrats: GOP Now the Party of ‘Hate Speech’ and ‘Bigotry’ (Video)

Embedded image permalinkLately it seems like there are no scruples or morals left in the Republican Party.  We have TEA Party Republicans who find it perfectly acceptable to demean people with whom they disagree with racial slurs, although they try to word them carefully and when called on it deny that they are racist.

They feel perfectly justified in attacking the LBGT community as perverted and immoral, saying that they are violating “God’s laws.” They smear their political opponents with nasty insinuations, and disrespect the President.

Judge Carlo Key, a county judge in Bexar County, Texas is running for reelection, he was elected on a Republican ticket, but he is not running for reelection as a Republican.

He is currently running a campaign ad in which he explains why he has decided to run as a Democrat this time around.  He says that he cannot continue his association with a party that feels it is okay to denigrate people because of their race, the color of their skin, their religion or who they have fallen in love with and choose to marry.

He says that he has not left the Republican Party, but rather, the party has left him.  For this reason he says that he can no longer be a member of a party filled with people who hate and would dispense justice based on their hatred.

For too long, the Republican Party has been at war with itself. Rational Republican beliefs have given way to ideological character assassination. Pragmatism and principle have been overtaken by pettiness and bigotry.

Make no mistake: I have not left the Republican Party — it left me. I cannot tolerate a political party that demeans Texans based on their sexual orientation, the color of their skin, or their economic status. [...] I cannot place my name on the ballot for a political party that is proud to destroy the lives of hundreds of thousands of federal workers over the vain attempt to repeal a law that will provide healthcare to millions of people who don’t have insurance.

Judge Key is a man of high moral standards and should be commended for taking a stand.  Let’s hope that the people of Bexar County realize what a treasure they have on the bench and keep him there.  With people like him, there is hope still for the state of Texas.
